10x8 inch(250x200mm) photo of the NAPIER RAILTON MOBIL SPECIAL land speed record car posed outside the Thompson & Taylor's workshops at Brooklands track in England in 1947 .
The workforce that had just rebuilt it after it's 8 year lay-up since breaking the record in 1939 are in the pbackground. The car with it's newly aquired MOBIL logos was ready for John Cobb to take to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah where he shortly became the first man to be timed at over 400mph on land and set a record not broken untill 1964! The twin Napier Lion powered 4 wheel drive car featured ground breaking aerodynmaics that do not look out of place today. The Ried Railton design remains one of the all time high points in automotive engineering and influenced more or less everything that came after it.
