ERA R1A, driven by Ron Flockhart and seen here at the start of the 1952 Bo'Ness hillclimb in Scotland. Flockhart ean this car and later R4D with such success in British races and hillclimbs that he earned a place on the BRM team and also raced for Ecurie Ecosse at le Mans, winning there with the D Type Jaguar.

This photo is taken at Bo'Ness hillclimb which was a popular venue in the 30's-40's-50's-60s and was the driveway up to a Scottish manor house. It fell into disuse in the mid 60s and was revivied in 2008! Some of the top end of the course was built on many years ago so the current layout is a little shorter than previously.

This is a superb photo from our archives, very sharp and full of action and atmosphere, printed up from the original negative.
