Wonderfully atmospheric shot from the 1952 Turnberry Formula 2 international in Scotland of world F1 champion (1958) Mike Hawthorn at full speed in his only drive in an F2 Connaught A Type - he won!
Hawthorn is sporting his famous spotted bow tie, and a short sleeved shirt as this event was held on a hot August day. No one worried about fireproofs in the 1950s!
Lovely period details include the barrels used to mark the course and the straw bales visible in the background which kept the cars out of the spectator areas..in theory!~
Turnberry was an airfield only used a few times and on this ocassion there were numerous top names among the entry list including Moss, Hamilton, Wharton and Parnell and the F1 race that was also held featured the two BRM V16s and the famous Thinwall Special Ferrari (also driven by Hawthorn).
