Nice photo of David H Murray - not the famous founder of the Ecurie Ecosse team- at speed with his BMW 328 reg FML 9 at the rather obscure Howcleugh hillclimb in Scotland in 1938.
This car was crashed by Pat Fairfield at Le Mans in 1937, fatally injuring the promising and popular ERA works driver. It was rebuilt at the factory and sold to David Hugh Murray, a Pinner-based garage owner who was a native of Edinburgh and an investor in the Frazer Nash concern (the British BMW importers by this point).
After the war he raced a Le Mans replica.
He raced at Howcleugh in 1938 and was 3rd behind the double-driven Alexander Special and ahead of the MG K3 of Hamish Weir.
