Rare previously unpublished photo of Auto Union D Type V12 Grand Prix car #4 at speed in the 1938 Donington Grand Prix, driven by the legendary Tazio Nuvolari, winner of the race itself. Novolari had spent years racing out of date Alfa Romeos against the 'Silver Arrows' of Mercedes and Auto Union. In 1938 he finally had his chance to drive what was probabaly the best car of it's day and certainly proved his almost supernatural driving ability at Donington, dominating the event. No one else got a look in.
Here he's seen at the entry to Hairpin, (these days "Old Hairpin") which has been rerouted on the present Donington Park layout, where Tazio is shown would be the gravel trap for the modern day corners .
The car looks massive but in fact it's quite small, Nuvolari was jockey-like in stature but a true giant in talent and fame.
