Unusual book on the area of the Meditteraneam where the rich and enobled wintered and played for generations, especially when motoring down from England. The road itself is between Nice and Mentone and the book covers the history of the area, the towns, the wars and battles fought there and it's inhabitants and nature as it evolved over time into the magnet for artists, writers (F Scott Fitzgerald, Hemmingway etc) and Bright Young Things it had become in the mid 1920s when published.
The author is most famous as the Victorian doctor who 'discovered' and treated THE ELEPHANT MAN , John Merrick, a story made famous in the Hollywood Movie starring Anthony Hopkins as Treves himself. 315 pages
Published in 1921 this is a second impression form 1926 and is in goioid clean order, foxing to the edge of the pages , an inscription "Far from the madding crowd... Xmas 1929" written in the front and unusually a very good original jacket. A little rough along the top edge but a rare survivor from this period.
