BOOK OF THE WEEK   

The story of 1950s sports car hero Archie Scott-Brown is amazing. Born with severe physical disabilities including an unformed right hand and no shin bones, he overcame seemingly impossible odds to not only race competitively but to be a match and sometimes more than a match for the top names of the day - Hawthorn, Moss, Salvadori etc.  Cambridge car builder Brian Lister provided his friend with sports racing cars that shot him to fame in 1956-7 . This very popular book draws heavily on Brian's recollections of Archie as a driver and a mate from those far off days when racing drivers partied hard in the knowledge that many would never make it to retirement. Sadly Archie was one of those who paid the ultimate price.

Author Robert Edwards tells the story of Archie's fight to survive at all from birth, his fight to live a normal life and his fight to  race at all against considerable opposition. It also charts Lister cars from their early 'special' days in local speed trials to racing at Le Mans and Sebring, production of some of the fastest sports racing cars of the era and being one of the pioneers of the British racing car industry that led to Lola, March, Reynard etc. 

 Time was when this book  would have sold for something  above £75... but due to the popularity of it's subject, a second edition has appeared in recent years and so even the early books now retail at very sensible money. This one is a 1985 1st edition in fine condition throughout apart from a minor bump at the base of the spine. A superb read. An amazing man.

Roland - The 'Works Van'

This is our Ford Popular 100E - or "Roland" as he's known .  He's the 'works van' and runs to and from the Post Office delivering parcels on a daily basis and at a sedate speed.. 

Roland is a 1960 1172cc side valve model with three speed gearbox and , because he's the De Luxe model has the luxury of a heater ...

He gets quite a lot of miles under his wheels each week and so needs the occasional bit of time off for  repairing and restoration - if anyone his any reasonably priced spare parts or tune up bits (Aquaplane would be nice, a Ford V8 side valve would be nicer....) just let us know !
